Dos And Don'ts Of Using Self Storage

Rodney George

Thinking about getting a storage unit to free up some room at home? If so, it will help to know the following dos and don'ts of using a self-storage unit.

Do: Keep The Unit Organized

Many people make the mistake of just putting things into the storage unit and figuring out how to organize it later. Don't fall into this trap by making sure that your storage unit is organized from the get-go. Come up with a plan for how you are going to store belongings in the unit, even if it is a very basic plan. Seasonal items that you will be frequently swapping out should be labeled and near the front, while things that are going in for a long time should be placed near the back. This will help prevent you from having to pull everything out of the storage unit just to get to that box of Christmas decorations.

Don't: Get A Normal Storage Unit If You Need Climate Controls

Think you can save some money by getting a normal storage unit without climate controls? It's important to look at everything you will be storing and if you need climate controls. Anything that can be damaged by extremely hot and cold temperatures or humidity can benefit from being placed in a storage unit. For example, leather furniture can crack under cold temperatures. Electronic devices can have metal components corrode if there is a lot of humidity. Look at everything that's going into storage now or in the future to determine if climate-controlled storage will be a good option.

Do: Consider The Distance From Your Home

If you are using self-storage because you live in an apartment or condo, you may be finding that you frequently need to visit the storage facility. Make sure that you do not pick a unit that is too far away from your home. You may find yourself not being too happy with the storage unit if you have to go very far out of your way to get things out of it. For instance, if you are using the storage unit for a place to store your bike, having to travel to get it may cause you to use your bike less.

Don't: Pay For More Room Than What You Need

Many storage facilities offer a variety of sizes to meet your needs. However, know that you always have the option to upgrade to a bigger storage unit. Start out small with the knowledge that you can upgrade to a bigger unit later if it is necessary. You'll save money by not paying for square footage you're not using.
